Apple iTunes Hits Over 1 Billion Podcast Subscribers

Apple has recently celebrated a massive 1 billion subscriber milestone for podcasts on iTunes. It was more than eights years ago that Apple included podcasts as an important part of the iTunes store and media player.

Some big stats that Apple revealed on Monday 22nd of July include:

  • 250,000 unique podcast shows
  • More than 8 million podcast episodes published
  • In over 100 different languages

This really highlights the importance and impact that podcasts have had over the years. The large number of apps downloaded (over 50 billion and counting) on iOS seems to always be a big focus, so it is nice to see the important medium of podcasts given their due. For many people, they probably spend more time listening to podcasts than messing around with the apps on their iPhone or iPod Touch.

Of course podcasts weren’t invented by Apple, though the name did evolve from the iPod name. Nonetheless this achievement is of great significance to the makers of the iPod. Podcasts play an important role in many of their products such as the Podcast section of iTunes, podcast integration with Apple TV, and specific support for podcast creation in the GarageBand software.

Podcasting has been around in one form or another for over 10 years, and it is still seeing plenty of growth thanks to the variety of shows and it’s on demand nature.

Some of the most popular podcasts that have been highlighted on iTunes are TWiT, All Songs Considered, and This American Life.

You can be sure that investments in new ways of listening and creating podcasts will continue in future versions of iTunes and iOS and new Apple products.
